Lights, Camera, Action Figures

Tron 2.2, originally uploaded by Thorsten Becker.

Tron is one of my all time favorite movies (see also the excellent Tron Sector). I have my current job due to this movie – watching it as a kid sparked my lifelong fascination with computers. I got my first computer (a Sinclair ZX81) not too long after watching the film and instantly started programming (I was about 10 at the time). I never lost that childhood fascination and am now working as a senior data architect.

So when the game Tron 2.0 came out back in 2003 I was fairly excited. I really enjoyed it and ended up buying the action figures as well (Jet, Mercury, Thorn and IC Regular). Depicted in this picture is Jet, the main protagonist.

For this shot I setup the figure against my computer screen and used one of my Fotodesign pictures. I set the camera to a blueish white balance and used multiple light sources to give it more of an inherent glow. I then edited the picture in Paint Shop Pro, further enhancing the glow, trying to give it that typical Tron feeling (which is not too easy using a plastic figure).

This picture is dedicated to Syd Mead, a fantastic artist, designer and illustrator of everything futuristic.
