You sacrificed a part of yourself, originally uploaded by Thorsten Becker.
You sacrificed a part of yourself
To protect the whole of me
To cover me, keep me safe
Protect me from life's cutting winds
From the coldness of frozen hearts
From blanketing notions
Descending like white shrouds
Through your loving kindness you taught me
To always care for those
We hold dear, we hold close
Dedicated to my grandfather, who I only knew for the first 8 years of my life but who will always stay with me. This year marks the 30th anniversary of his death.

Vielen Dank Ines, ich hab mich sehr über deinen Kommentar gefreut. It’s always a bit scary for me to share such personal feelings. But I think it’s a poet’s responsibility to find words for difficult feelings and emotions, easing some of the loneliness one may experience. It can leave the poet vulnerable, but on the chance that it helps someone feeling understood I happily take the risk.
Hi Thorsten,
This is absolutely beautiful. Family and loved ones seem to bring out the deepest words in us I think. I wrote a poem like this about 5 years ago about my grandfather whom I didn’t know very well, but was re-united with my biological Father because of his death.

Thank you Melissa for the nice comment and for relating a personal story. I agree that family, if by blood or by kindred spirit, evokes the deepest emotions. I personally place great value on family life, especially these days where many break apart so easily. I believe we need to hold on to those cherished memories, and values, lest they be lost in time. Thank you again.

This poem is certainly one of my most personal and there is always a struggle of sharing such words with a public audience. All of your kind words are deeply appreciated, thank you.
