The last unicorn passes through

03 Nov

When the last eagle flies
Over the last crumbling mountain
And the last lion roars
At the last dusty fountain
In the shadow of the forest
Though she may be old and worn
They will stare unbelieving
At the Last Unicorn

From the song “The last Unicorn” by Jimmy Webb, performed by America, the title song of the movie by the same name.

This is a homage to an all time favorite of mine. I first watched The Last Unicorn as a kid and have been seeing it many times since – and will see it many more times. It’s a timeless classic based on Peter S. Beagle‘s novel and one of the few US animated features that has a true emotional impact similar to Japanese productions (animation was coordinated by Tohru Hara who also worked on“Grave of the Fireflies” and “My Neighbor Totoro”). Much kudos also goes to Jimmy Webb and the group America for the excellent soundtrack which significantly adds to the atmosphere of the movie (I have listened to it dozens of times).
