I shall forever be autumn’s child

Here it comes, that first chill in the air, that blue messenger from the north, the first silver light that filters through fading green. Barely noticeable, summer's final days have arrived. Softly the trees begin to sing their farewell songs. Autumn's first breath passes along their crowns, carries with it ocher and sienna and burgundy notes of goodbye as it slowly unravels their emerald garments. I welcome you, bringer of scarfs and woolen coats, of knitted gloves and padded boots, for my heart beats in rhythm with your racing winds, my soul embraces your twilight, you, bringer of early sunsets and brisk starry nights. Here, in the corridor of ethereal sights, hallway of mysterious lights, I shall walk beside you and breath in your mossy, earthy fragrance, that smell of pumpkin desserts and mushroom soups. For rain or shine, storm or gentle chill, I shall forever be autumn's child.

  • Thank you very much Yvonne, really nice to hear from you. Hope all is well and maybe we’ll see you guys again soon (now that we’re back over here), that would be great.

  • Dear Thorsten, I feel this is a very perfect piece of writing, and marvelous marriage of words and image, entirely evocative of autumn. I intend to share it with many people. (I haven’t commented before here, although I have enjoyed several visits to this remarkable site, because my comments are really unnecessary to the amazing communications you have created. So, I will only say that what I have found here speaks to me in a language that I understand, that I don’t hear often anymore, and that I’m greatly appreciative of finding your work.) All the best, Georgianna

  • Dear Georgianna, thank you very much for taking the time to write, I very much appreciate your kind and encouraging comments! I am delighted to hear my words resonated with you. As an child of the northern hemisphere autumn (born in October) I always feel that much more inspired once we reach this cusp of changing from the warm and lazy summer days to the cooler and cozy autumn days, when it begins to feel very “Poe-ish” as well as “Doyle-ish” outside (if I may use such word constructs).

Certainly I’d like to compliment your excellent photography that so skillfully captures light and moods and the essence of nature. I really enjoyed seeing your work.

  • Hi Thorsten, You’re so welcome and I think “Poe-ish” and “Doyle-ish” are very apt descriptions! And my turn to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kind words about my photography and for mentioning it to Holly. I arose to some delightful surprises this morning! Oh my! So my gratitude for that, truly. Have a lovely weekend!

  • Oh what a lovely tribute to autumn — a perfect marriage of words and image!

  • Thank you Mary, very much appreciate the nice comment! I noticed your “In a soft light” blog, very nice photography, enjoyed looking through it (and took the liberty of adding it to my Inspiring links).
