The silence heralds Charon’s imminent arrival

That which was fading has now come to pass. The last winter light, ash and livid, floats across the waters, above bare trees, watching for the passing of the season of white and slumber. New light breaks across the sky. Familiar silhouettes begin to emerge from the south. Warmth touches frozen earth gently calling that which is slumbering within to awake.
But there is one last moment of silence as Charon draws near from across the mirror's edge. All is oh so quiet as he approaches without a ripple in the water, without a single sound of the oar. As he lands upon the shore frost steps unto his ferry with an icy hush. Here now Charon looks, with keen gaze, to the sky and greets the rising sun, she who touches with tender rays bony cheeks and weathered face. With a knowing smile gracing his stern countenance he bids farewell and quietly steers his ferry towards the mists of memories past that there may be a forgetting of days cold and dreary. Thus winter's breath fades as he returns from whence he came.
So it is done, as it's been done before. And as the passing concludes the sun caringly looks upon the land again. Now there are sounds, now there is awakening within the earthen realm. Life pushes toward the surface, stretching vigorously, shaking the sleep of season white.

  • You are such a quotable writer! This is a lovely thought, “Life pushes toward the surface, stretching vigorously, shaking the sleep of season white.” That is such an imaginative way of saying goodbye to winter.

This will stay in my mind all day now…
