Perception-in-action

Perception-in-action, originally uploaded by Thorsten Becker.

How big is great?
How far is farther?
How close is near?
How deep is understanding?

Let your eyes rest on a small chair and experience perception-in-action.

The chair in the picture is a mere 2.5 inches tall (7 cm), a model of an Eames Eiffel Chair with wooden base (here is a picture of the actual chair for reference). Without proper reference it may be difficult to judge with accuracy what we see. We not always perceive things the way they really are. I find that rather exciting as it opens new perspectives, quite literally.

  • That’s a really nice thought. I often wonder, to angels and God, what ‘size’ human beings are in relation to them and how the perceive size. And I wonder in the insect world how certain ones, like ants, perceive size when they are picking up leaves and things to bring to their nest. And how they view people, I mean to us a man that is 5’5″ is considered ‘short’ for an adult male but to an ant, that man would be absolutely intimidating to a creature the size of a mere insect.

And yet with all of these sizes around us, great and small, we as humans precisely know how to live within all this life and size, we even know how much force we should use when approaching a lady bug to gently push onto our finger so as to not destroy it.

It’s all quite amazing, you know…

I love your thoughts on this little chair. It is exciting to think about such matters.
