Is it safe, mom?, originally uploaded by Thorsten Becker.
Where I live there are plenty of chipmunks scurrying around, always busy, usually cheeks stuffed with whatever they find (which is more than just peanuts). Though undeniably cute (yup) and playful I usually only see them running around alone, except for the occasional quibbles with one another. So watching a chipmunk running up a stone wall, then turning around and leaning back over the edge only to observe a second, smaller one emerge under its chin as it came back up was a new experience. I am assuming it was mother and child as the adult kept encouraging the little one to come up, all the while caressing it. They then swirled around each other briefly and jumped down into the bushes next to me.
The moral of this little encounter: When you think you’ve seen it all there’s more, every day. Just keep your eyes open.
