Look indirectly

31 Oct

Look indirectly, originally uploaded by Thorsten Becker.

The eyes can be deceiving,
Seeing what they want to see.
Things seen, so obvious
The hidden truth lies beyond.
Beauty in the lines and shadows
Which cannot be perceived at once.
Things we’re used, so mundane
Seen so often, every day.
Appreciation may be lacking
And details slip our attention.
Look next
Look past
Look beyond
Look indirectly
See the invisible
Cherish its splendor.

City lights

31 Oct

City lights, originally uploaded by Thorsten Becker.

Night falls, the city awakens from its slumber of confused lethargy and aimless rush.
The noise settles, calms down, if ever so slightly.
The watchers and onlookers take their seats, glasses clink, laughter, conversations.
Then the lights come on.
Those city lights.
And the actors take to the stage
The glamorous, the famous, the infamous and the barely noticed.
They all dance and chime and sing to the rhythm of the night
To the pulsating, rushing, streaking city lights.
Those city lights.
Pay no mind to the worries of the day, don’t wonder about the next.
Stay calmly for a moment, close your eyes, but barely.
Watch them flicker, rise and ebb.
Watch their stories unfold as they break through the haze.
Let them tell you of the night,
Those city lights.

Of autumn colors

30 Oct

Of autumn colors, originally uploaded by Thorsten Becker.

Summer’s cheeriness is fading.
The time of deliberate contemplation,
Of deep thoughts and meditation arrives.
The bright colors of lazy afternoons
Of sweet deliberate easiness
Make way for spurts and dabs
Of cozy comfort on dreary days.
It is the season of rust brown,
Of burnt ocher and sienna,
Of autumn colors, soothing to the eye.

The Orchid

The Orchid, originally uploaded by Thorsten Becker.

Of all the flowers fairest
One there is the darest
With colors boldly shining
Moves my hearts inclining
To wonder and admire
Thy beauty, to all aspire
May you forever reign supreme
Orchid, flower of high esteem.

For a brief period about 20 years ago I’ve cultivated a few orchids inspired by watching Nero Wolfe. After visiting the Hannover Berggarten the other day and spending some time in the orchid greenhouse I am inclined to get back into it. The orchid remains my favorite flower, in all its great varieties.

Blue Pearl

Blue Pearl, originally uploaded by Thorsten Becker.

In a vast velvet ocean of scattered light
One precious blue pearl shines bright.
Surrounded by a protective shell
Its great beauty everyone can tell.
Far and wide there is no other
Like this one, my sister, my brother.
To take good care of it we have been urged
Lest if we’d go squandering it we’d be purged.
Tis a treasure given in good faith to us
Should we not be grateful for it thus?
There is a blue pearl shining bright
Won’t we do with it what’s right?
